Please Join Us (after the pandemic)!

Science Club is not currently happening due to coronavirus. Usually we meet every month during the school year. We are planning to bring Science Club back when the pandemic is over. The STEM festival each fall (demonstrations by adults) and the Science Fair each spring (elementary student projects) are also on hold for now. See below for fun science places (some are still open!) and websites in the meantime.

You must turn in a permission slip (link below) for your child before they come to Science Club for the first time in a school year. Forms include emergency contact information and will be kept on file all year. If you sent a slip but haven't heard back within a few days, contact us or send it again.

There are 2 Science Club meetings per month: the first session for students in grades 2-5, and the second is for kindergartners and first graders. You must sign up your child (link below) at least 24 hours before their Science Club meeting, because space is limited. If we have your permission slip, we'll email you when the online sign-up opens each month, about a week before the meeting.

The meetings are generally a Tuesday (grades 2-5) and Wednesday (grades K-1) in the same week near the end of each month.

After the school bell (about 3:40pm) we meet in the gymnasium and then go to a classroom (precise room TBD). Science Club lasts until 5:00pm. Please sign out your child when you pick them up!

Awesome local science stuff

There are lots of science, engineering, and math opportunities in the Greater Lansing area and on the internet!

Impression 5 Science Center

I5 is in downtown Lansing, and it has hands-on exhibits and activities for all ages. They also have a wide variety of summer childcare activities, and they do great birthday parties. They joined us for a couple of Science Club meetings in 2017!

Abrams Planetarium

On the MSU campus, the planetarium is a great place to learn about the night sky. It's a mini museum too, with a giant globe, a space capsule, and cool black light posters. Also, the MSU Observatory is occasionally open for public viewing through their GIANT telescope!

Makerspaces

Makerspaces are workshops and meeting spaces for people who like to design and build cool stuff. There's a tinkrLAB in the Meridian Mall, and the Lansing Makers Network has a larger facility in downtown Lansing. The East Lansing Public Library also has a maker studio.

Michigan History Center

This is a beautiful place to learn about Michigan history, science, industry, and culture.

Public Libraries

In addition to lots of (science) books, the East Lansing Public Library also runs a Maker Studio! The MSU Library is open to the public (adults can get a MSU community library card and check books out even if they don't work at MSU), and the Capital Area District Library system has locations all over Greater Lansing. The Library of Michigan is in downtown Lansing. It also runs the Michigan eLibrary, which can send you books through your local library. Don't forget about the Whitehills school library, either!

MSU Museum

The MSU Museum on Circle Drive near the MSU library is a wonderful place to learn about nature and culture (and it has DINOSAURS and MASTODONS). We love their annual Darwin Discovery Day in February.

Nature Centers

Fenner Nature Center and Woldumar Nature Center in Lansing, the Harris Nature Center in Okemos, and the Bengel Wildlife Center in Bath are wonderful places to enjoy the outdoors and learn about Michigan plants and wildlife. There's also Potter Park Zoo right here in Lansing!
